STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.

ANNUAL MEETING.

I Punctually at 12 o’clock to-day, at the annual meeting of the Council, Cr Hathaway vacated the chair, which was then temporarily occupied by Mr C. Penn (clerk), who asked for nominations. All the members except Cr Baskin were in favour of Cr Hathaway being re-elected, Cr Baskin proposing Cr Smith. There was an almost unI aniraous feeling for the re-election of |Cr Hathaway ns chairman. Cr Chrisj toff el proposed his re-election, and in doing so, said that Cr Hathaway had carried out his duties well, although he had had a great many difficulties to contend with.

Cr Walter, in seconding, said Cr Hathaway had had a very difficult time, and had carried out his duty honestly and faithfully to the ratepayers. He considered they could not do better than re-elect the chairman. Cr Anderson also supported the nomination. Cr Were said that taking all in all, Cr Hathaway had done the best he possibly could for the Council, j Cr Worthington also spoke in a like strain. ) Cr Coleman, speaking in favor of Cr Hathaway, said he felt sure the chairman would do his host in the coming year as in the past* I Cr Smith said that whatever friction there had been during the past twelve months, he could assure the chairman he wished him well. Ho bore no ill-will whatever.

| Or Hathaway: Oh yes, we are good j friends.

The only dissentient voice was Cr Baskin, who proposed Cr Smith, saying he thought in Cr Smith they would get a more energetic man. He .then reviewed old grievances, alluding ( to lack of memory and other personalities and the ideal chairman in the past. Cr Baskin was the only one to infer that the Chairman had not been all he might have been. | Cr Smith thanked Cr Baskin for his I compliment, but could not think of jsuch a thing. 1 Cr Hathaway resumed the chair and thanked the majority of the Coun- . cillors for their confidence, j Cr Baskin: Allow me to congratulate you. • ’ ’ j Smilingly, Cr Hathaway said: I appreciate Cr Baskin’s congratulations very much. Business then resumed, the Chairman remarking that in his annual report he overlooked to thank the Press for their courtesy shown to him at all times.
