A full programme lias been arranged for this evening’s concert at Toko by the Stratford Anzacs, ami a full house is anticipated. A social in aid of the Trentham Methodist Institute will ho held m the Methodist Schoolroom, Eegan Street, to-morrow (Thursday) evening, commencing at 7.40. At the meeting of the Stratford County Council to-day, the Engineer was instructed to report on the state of the Manganui bridge, and to confer with the Railway Department on the matter. Weather Forecast.—The indications are for westerly moderate to strong winds and veering by west to north. Expect warm and humid conditions, with increasing haze and cloudiness, change following. The Tahora Rifle Club are proceeding to Inglewood on Saturday, 9th December, to take part in a match with the Inglewood Club. The targets to be used will be figures at 300 and 500, and at 600yds, bull’s-eye targets.

The Public Service and Senior National Scholarship examinations began at the Technical School, Stratford, to-day. In the morning the candidates had Hygiene and Metal Work for subjects, and in the afternoon the papers were on Chemistry and Physics.

Out of twelve recruits presenting themselves for examination liom Stratford for the Front, only two were passed by the medical officer at New Plymouth yesterday, although their physical defects in most cases were only .of a slight nature. From reports to hand, there is an abundance of feed throughout the dis tricts, especially at Purangi, Tarata, and Matau, where few slips have occurred, the damage by the recent storm not being serious. There has been a loss of shorn sheep in the district, owing to the heavy rain following so soon after shearing. Generally speaking, the country is looking remarkably well, and there is a marked demand for sheep and cattle. For two-tooth sheep so great is the demand, now that there is plenty of feed, that one firm of stock agents, to satisfy the local demand, procured 4000 sheep from tlm- Rangitikei district.

Under the auspices of the Stratford Patriotic Committee, an Orchestral and Vocal Concert will he given in the Town Hall on Wednesday, December 6th, by the Hawera Male Choir and combined Concert Party, the proceeds are to be given to the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund, and there is no doubt the concert will draw a very largo audience. Exceptionally good vocalists will contribute items, and a really line programme has been drawn np, so that patrons may look forward to a splendid musical treat. The rare cantata “The Desert,” will he performed by the Hawera Male Choir and a special orchestra. Patrons of the concert while enjoying unique and inspiring musical items will materially assist to build np the fund to provide for our sick and wounded boys from the front.

At the Patriotic Mart on Saturday/ last, the sum of £8 8s 6d was realise and at the T<:a Rooms £8 was taken. The cake presented by the start’ of | the Central Co-operative Store for the Red Cross Fund, was won by Mr Patriel; Phelan, and Mrs llivett won tho cushion. Both articles have been oti view at the Patriotic Rooms, Broadway. Before the signing of the minutes at the meeting of the Stratford Cbunty Council to-day, much discussion took place as. to the Engineer’s car, it being not distinctly stated in the mimics that power was given to the committee to purchase a "new car. To put the matter right. Cr Walter moved, and Cr Coleman seconded, that the minutes be amended so as to read “with power to purchase a new car.” After a little discussion, the resolution was carried, Crs Baskin and Smith voting against it. The annual sale of work in connection with the Church of England will be held in the Parish Hall, Stratford, next Saturday, from 12 noon to 10 p.m.. Mrs J. B. Mine, wife of the member for the district, will open the sale punctually at noon, ibis year’s effort promises to excel any previously made. Various artistic novelties; sofa cushions, afternoon tea cloths, bags, also numbers of plain and useful articles will be lor sale at reasonable prices. The produce stall will be well supplied, and delight the hearts of thrifty housewives. Both the sweets and flower stalls are in capable hands. The children will be pleased with the mysteries hidden in the bran tub. During the evening, various competitions will he held, including nail-driv-ing, hat trimming, etc, and instrumental musical items will be rendered. Admission is free during the day, but the small charge of sixpence will be made in the evening. At the Hawke’s Bay Spring Show held at Hastings recently, sheep dipped in “McDougall’s” secured the following awards: —ll championships out of 14, 33 firsts, 16 seconds, 7 thirds, and 6 very highly commended.
