THE BIG AFFAIR.

ON THURSDAY NEXT.

Entries close at 6 o’clock this evening for a majority of the events on the programme of the great Fire Brigade Garden Fete to be held on the showgrounds on Thursday next. The closing of entries for the decorated classes has been postponed for a few days. It is expected that all residents of •Stratford will take part either as spectators or performers, and the children of the school have been called on to provide a share of the day’s entertainment. They will contribute a grand march and a Maypole dance. They have been practising hard foxsome time, and now, under capable direction, they have acquired a high degree of proficiency in the many pretty and intricate movements they are to go through. A great number of novelty items appear on the programme, such as obstacle and poster race for motor cyclists, apple bobbing race for horses, bun and ginger beer race, tx-eacle-bun race, and a variety of others of a like i nature.

The side-show department lias received a lot of attention, and hero again a lot of novelties are provided, including the exhilarating and strenuous pastime of riding the barrel. A somewhat mysterious show called Jack Johnson should be worthy of investigation.

Madame Vedrini, palmist and phrenologist, has been engaged, so that those who have been requested or commanded to “get their heads read” will have an opportunity of undergoing the operation. At 3 p.m. there will be a grand parade, which should form an imposing spectacle. Full details of the programme will be found on page 8 of this issue.
