_ +..-. AUSTRALIAN CRACKS COMPETE AT AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association, i i Auckland, March 4. The swimming gala which is being held under the auspices of the Auckland Centre of the N.Z.A.S.A., aud which is rendered notable by tho presence of half-a-dozen Australian crack swimmers, including the champions Harold Hardwick and Miss Fanny Dtirack, opened last night. Miss Durack missed a place in her heat of the ladies' 36yds dash by a bare touch, after giving away lOsec to the young lady who beat her. The meeting of Champion, the New Zealand crack, and Harold Hardwick, the Australian champion, in the '220 yds handicap excited chief interest. Both were in the first heat. Champion bad a start of 4sec. The New Zealander trudged away with a quick stroke right from the jump, whereas Hardwick did the first 100 yards with the exhausting craw] stroke, which, however, brought him to Champion's heels, whereon he changed to a long, clean, steady trudge, and though he vas kicking only two to Champion's three, he forged up inch by inch, drawing level at 200yds. There was just a touch in Hnrdwick's favor at the winning rope. In the final Champion did not compete, and Hardwick was just beaten by C. Sinton, who had lOsec start.

A meeting of the committee of the Stratford Swimming Club was held last night. A programme was drawn up for the carnival to be held on March 18th. The races include three open races for men, two races for women, and one for boys.

It was decided that all trophies won be presented as early as possible.
