Mr Green, presiding at the Orient Steamship Co. meeting, said the financial pinch in Australia was only temporary. The company would reap the benefit of increased trade in immigration when developmental activities were renewed, but it was important that the Commonwealth Government should progress on sound lines.

Herr von J\igonr, President of Police,. accuses the court-martial of convicting Lieut- von Forstner contrary to law. If officers stationed almost iu the enemy’s country are threatened with prosecution for sabring civilians it will disgrace the noblest profession. The repeal of the law is an urgent political necessity.

COMPULSORY WIRELESS.
London, December 23
It is believed that the Life-Saving Conference recommends the compulsory use of wireless telegraphy, divided into three classes, viz., first, continuous; second, during limited working hours, with ten minutes’ shifts in other hours; and, thirdly, irregular working hours.
RECORD BALLOON FLIGHT. Berlin, December 23. A German balloon travelled in a non-stop run from Bittersfield to Perm, in Russia, a distance of 1030 miles, a record. The balloon was 87 hours in the air.
THE PROHIBITION MOVEMENT. Washington, December 22. A memorial was presented to President Wilson requesting an amendment to the Republic’s constitution providing for prohibition throughout the Tinted States. The President ordered the publication of the memorial without comment thereon.
A THIN STORY. Berlin, December 20. The Countess Meilczynski’s companion states that the young Count Came to the castle for the purpose of borrowing money trom his uncle. He knocked at the Countess’ door at three o’clock in the morning and asked her to order a motor-car to enable .him to leave. She said; “Von are drunk. Sleep it off first.” The young count forced Ins way into the room and at the same moment the husband appeared and fired.
