CYCLING AND NOTES.

An American motor-cyclist named V. E. Davis has succeeded in riding across the United States from San Francisco to New York, a distance ol 3746 miles, in 20 days 9 hours 1 minute, or over eleven days faster than the previous motor-cycle record across America. Davis, who rode a 75 h.p. Twin machine, met with .more than ; fair share of wet weather during the trip, and one day, despite plugging along through mud and slush for many hours, only succeeded in covering 49 miles. The longest day’s tall;, was 289 miles. A remarkable feature of the ride was that Davis had only one tyre puncture during the ride, which embraces some of the roughest tracks in the United States. The average daily mileage for the full trip works out at over 180 miles—a remarkable performance, considering tin nature of the country passed through. The motor-car record for the same run —only hy a route nearly two hundre* miles shorter—is hold by L. L. Whitman, who, in August last year, nego tinted the trip in 10 days 15 hours 13 min. The Goulhurn-Sydney Road Race, the premier road event of New South Wales—which is promoted annually hy the Dunlop Rubber Company to select the accredited New South Wales i epresentativo for the WarrnamboolMelhourne Race—was held on Saturday, and judging by our cabled report to-day, was a most interesting contest. A large number of intcT-State visitors took part in the event, including several of New Zealand’s host riders. The rocoid for this hilly 131 mih's’ course is Ghr. 35min. 3Gsec., established hy T. Larcombe (N.S.W.), in the 1908 contest.
