SMALL, VESSELS NOT WANTED.— Nine small vessels in Auckland valued at about £241,000 have been left on the hands of the New Zealand Government following the sudden end of the war and the termination of Allied contracts. Built for war purposes and at wartime costs, the craft include three 75ft steel tugs, four 114 ft powered lighters, and two 45ft kauri towboats, and their disposal is causing considerable concern. Nobody is to blame for the present position which, like the dismissal of a large number of workmen from Auckland yards last September, is simply a natural result of the cessation of hostilities at a time when an “all out” building programme was still in progress. In addition to the nine finished or practically completed vessels, there are a number of other jobs in varying stages of construction on which work has ceased.
