SHIPS PROVIDORE FINED £l85
Breaches Of Rationing Regulations
I (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 5. Fines totalling £lB5 were imposed on Steven John Newland, ship’s providore, by Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today. Newland on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to 21 charges involving alleged breaches of the Rationing and Price Control Regulations. Counsel for Newland (Mr H. F. O’Leary) said Newland had fallen into his errors because it had not been made clear to him by the rationing authorities what the position was concerning the supply of rationed commodities to ships. Mr Maunsell said Newland had elected to decide what was right and wrong. He had systematically broken numerous regulations. Where the offences had not been wilful they had been reckless. The Magistrate added that the most serious offences were the four heard on Wednesday, involving the illegal sale of 90 dozen eggs. On each of those four charges Mr Maunsell fined Newland £2O, and on each of the remaining seven rationing charges, heard on Wednesday, a fine of £lO was imposed.
