WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL
Subsidy For Drainage Scheme Advice that the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council had approved a subsidy of £lOOO, £1 for £l, towards the drainage scheme proposed by Cr H. G. Pinckney and other ratepayers at Waimatuku, was received at a meeting of the Wallace County Council from the resident engineer, Public Works Department, Invercargill. Members expressed pleasure at this result, which included approval of the drainage proposal put forward to improve this area. The estimated cost was £2055.
The acting clerk of the Southland Catchment Board, advised that a rate would be struck next year and that local bodies would collect the rate for the board. The council decided to object to collecting more than one-farth-ing total rate, but agreed that the rate be collected on the capital value. It was decided that plans and specifications be drawn for 14 chains of concrete footpaths, channelling and kerbing from Cameron’s store to the Bridge Corner at Tuatapere, and that an application be made for a subsidy from the Main Highways Board towards this work.
The council decided it had no jurisdiction over the paying of a share of completely fencing the Tuatapere Domain.
Mr H. L. Crengle, secretary of the Colac Bay Hall Committee, wrote protesting against the Government taking over Colac Bay Drill Hall for storage purposes as it was needed for all local public functions. The committee undertook, now the war was over, to raise funds to carry out repairs to the hall.
Mr J. G. Leckie, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, also forwarded a letter of protest. The council decided to retain the hall.
