ABERHALL WILL DO BETTER

PONY EXPRESS WON EASILY Withdrawals for the Forbury Park meeting are due next Monday. Bookings to Dillon Hall Recent bookings to Dillon Hall include: Rent Free (Erin’s King-Stirling McKinney), Lady Chenault (Peter Chen-ault-Nyallo), Reyden (Rey de OroDenver Huon mare), Gayola (Adioo Guy-Lydia), Night Nurse (Wellington-Direct-Our Nurse), and Colene Parrish (Guy Parrish-Colene Pointer).

Show Day Permission having been granted, the Metropolitan Trotting Club will use the extra permit which was recently made available to race on Show Day. This means that the spring meeting will now be held on November 3,9, 10, the first race on the Saturdays commencing at 11 a.m., while the first race on Show Day will commence at noon. With an extra day’s racing, the club will now be able to cater for horses which otherwise would not have had an opportunity of racing at the meeting, and a revised programme will be published shortly. Useful Effort

Aberhall’s placing on Saturday stamped him as a four-year-old above the average. The Dillon Hall gelding lost a lot of ground in the early running and with six furlongs to go he was still at the rear of the field. A sustained run landed him in third place and the first occasion he elects to begin correctly he will keep the improvers busy. He has developed into a fine type of four-year-old.

Southland Novices Three Southland novices in Stimulant, More Expense and Redcliffe Direct were solidly supported to win the Brockville Handicap at Wingatui. Redcliffe Direct extinguished his chance by tangling after the field had gone little over a furlong. More Expense was in the firing line all the way but tired in the run home and Stimulant, whose consistency last season was a feature of his efforts, was a moderate third after being well placed throughout. All three may be regarded as early prospects. Easy Win Pony Express had one of the easiest wins of the day at Methven when he won the Mount Hutt Handicap by four lengths from Ace of Diamonds, with Implacable in third place. Pony Express (states The Press, Christchurch) was confidently driven by F. G. Holmes, who was content to follow Paddy Potts over the first mile and ahalf, at which stage he took Pony Express to the front and opened up a gap of four lengths as the straight was approached. Pony Express was not extended to win, and on this performance he should soon win again. By a champion trotter in Royal Worthy, he is from a winner in Fugelene, by Silk Thread from Nellie Audubon, by Great Audubon from Penelope, by Rothschild from the Lincoln Yet mare Georgina. Chances to Qualify Will any of the nine horses assessed on 4min. 23sec and 4min 24sec for two miles qualify for the next New Zealand Trotting Cup? Between now and the date for the declaration of handicaps there are four opportunities for them to improve their marks sufficiently to make them eligible. They are the President’s Handicap at the New Brighton Club’s meeting, the King George Handicap at Forbury, and the Victory Handicap and the Labour Day Handicap at the Auckland Clubs meeting, to be held on October 20 and 22. The horses handicapped on 4min. 23sec and 4 min 24sec are as follows: Battle Colours, Betty Boop, Cabin Boy, Safety Pin, Special Edition, and Trusty Scott 4min 24sec, Volo Senwod, Knave of Diamonds, and Joan Conquest 4min 23sec. Of the nine pacers listed Knave of Diamonds, Volo Senwod and Cabin Boy are the most likely to make the grade. Knave of Diamonds is engaged in the principal two-mile race at Addington next Saturday. It is a 4min 28sec class, and his task of winning from 60yds is a big one. Like Volo Senwod he will be better served by the tighter classes for the Victory Handicap and the Labour Day Handicap at Auckland. The limit for the Victory Handicap is 4min 27sec, and the limit for the Labour Day Handicap is 4min 26sec.

OTAKI MAORI MEETING Flying Tor Fancied For Ling Memorial (Special) WELLINGTON, October 4. Good fields are engaged at the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Provision has been made for divisions in both maiden events, which are now the second and fifth on the programme, and in the Pahiko and Mema Handicaps. It is unlikely that divisions will be necessary, as the Maidens are only two above the safety number the Pahiko Handicap three above and the Mema Handicap four above and in the two latter races there are several dual acceptors. The weather cleared today, and if it remains fine the track should be in good order. Betting will be win and place, and the following horses will be well supported: 11.30: KAPITI HURDLES — Gay Rajah, Peach King, Bettermusk. 12.15: PUHI MAIDEN No. I—Peter Robinson, Royal Sward, Lily Ann. 1.0: PAHIKO HANDICAP—FIying Orders, Cooraclare, Broielov. 1.45: LING MEMORIAL STAKES— Flving Tor, Tavern Light, Aqueduct. 2.30: PUHI MAIDEN No. 2—Calm Courage, Gay Flame, Lord Bradbury. 3.15: KATIHIKU HANDICAP— Dileas, Leyboume, Foxcatcher. 4.45: MEMA HACK HANDICAP— Battle Dance, Fame Bian, Solver.
