PLANS FOR NEW SHIPS

Dominions Coastal Trade

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 28. Plans fox’ four or five new ships for the New Zealand coastal trade have been prepared by the Union Steam Ship Company and are now in England awaiting the time when shipbxiilders will be able to tender for construction of vessels other than standard wartime types. An official of the company said that 'the vessels would be 6f- an improved type suitable for carrying either coal or general cargoes. They would be specially adapted to New Zealand conditions.

A suggestion was recently made by the Auckland Chamber. of Commerce that the company should purchase several light-draught vessels of the type of landing craft tanks for carrying coal cargoes from the West Coast of the South Island. In reply, it was stated that such ships would be unsuitable for navigating harbour bars. The company added that it had already placed orders for a number of more up-to-date colliers.
