MILK PASTEURIZATION

REGULATIONS GAZETTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 9. Two sets of regulations dealing with milk pasteurization are gazetted tonight. The first, the Milk Treatment Regulations, 1945, prescribes the requirements for processes and equipment used in the pasteurization of milk for sale. Two methods are recognized, the “bolding” method and the “high temperature short time” method. They do not apply to persons carrying on such business in premises at the present time until the regulations are applied by the Minister of Health to the local authority area in which such persons are'operating. The regulations also provide that after January 1, 1947, the pasteurizing of milk for sale shall be conducted under the supervision of a person officially recognized as trained in the work. . The second set of regulations, the Sale of Food and Drugs Amending Re1945, No. 2, make provision for the recognition of the “high temperature short time” method of milk pasteurization and provide standards for pasteurized milk and cream. They also make certain labelling provisions and set out the technical details concerning the laboratory testing of pasteurized milk.
