Commercial CITY MARKETS

INCREASING DEMAND FOR SEED WHEAT Excellent spring weather has been experienced in Southland during the week. The ground is drying up well and farmers have been able to work the soil. t Wheat—Farmers are responding to the call to grow more wheat and merchants are experiencing a good demand* for seed. Shipments of Canadian wheat are arriving periodically in the North Island and supplies are being released for fowl-feed purposes. South Island millers have been instructed to release under-grade lines to the poultry trade. t ■ . . , Oats—The market has been quieter lately and very few lines have changed hands. Grain out of condition is hard to quit. All seed markets have been fairly quiet without either local or overseas inquiries. Sales of high-germination ryegrass and certified Italian have been made. The market for browntop, cocksfoot and Chewings fescue is easier and the dogstail market is also inclined to weaken. . BIG SHIPMENT OF ORANGES The largest shipment of oranges received in Invercargill for several years arrived this week and it was hoped that supplies would be more than adequate. Unfortunately, delays in transport resulted in a serious deterioration and there will be a large percentage of waste. Supplies of oranges are only dribbling into retail hands as the greater part of the shipment has to be repacked in the marts. A consignment of Australian lemons, which arrived at the same time, was in first-class condition. The market is well supplied at present with grapefruit. No apples arrived on; the market last week, but an extra quantity is being released later this week. The principal variety offering is still Delicious. Small quantities of pears are still arriving weekly. , The vegetable market is still starved of supplies. There are plenty of swedes ana a few more carrots are becoming available. Parsnips are unprocurable and other types of vegetables are exceptionally scarce.
