BOWLS

SEASON’S ACTIVITIES

REVIEWED A successful season is disclosed in the report of activities of the Southland Bowling Centre, to be submitted to the annual meeting of delegates on August 18. Apart from the conduct of tournaments, the balancesheet shows that a profit of £62/l»/b was made on the South Island t - nament and a profit of £37/5/2; 01 ?_ , Easter tournament. The credit bank balance over the season’s working was r» -I co /i /-i The total membership of the 30 dubs affiliated to the centre stands at IUW, showing an increase of 91 on the 'P re Y“ ious year’s figures, states the re P°“; During the year, the Stewart Island Club made application for affiliation, which has been approved. The members of the Limehills Club are working hard in preparing their new green, which should be ready for sowing down in the early spring. . The past season, which was full or activity, was carried through with great success. All the usual competitions were completed. The South Island tournament turned out most successful, a pleasing feature being the presence of a large number of visitors from most parts of the South Island. “We cannot speak too highly of the help we received from our own clubs, which went to no end of trouble in

having their greens well prepared for this important event. Club members who acted as umpires and markers and the club ladies who looked after the wants of the inner man all did a great job, and to them much of the credit is due. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the Southland Ladies’ Bowling Association, who provided funds and made all necessary arrangements to entertain the many visiting ladies who were present. It is pleasing to see our two centres working in such harmony. The Southland Amateur Sports Trust Association donated £lO towards providing trophies, and their action was much appreciated. “One-day tournaments are becoming very popular, and during the past season some 24 were conducted, with full greens on most occasions. The New Zealand Council has granted permission to clubs in the Southland, Otago Central and South Otago Centres to solicit entries from clubs in any of the three centres when holding a oneday tournament. This action by the New Zealand council will be much appreciated by the clubs concerned.” The annual match for the Harraway Shield was played in Dunedin on Saturday, February 24, resulting in a win for Southland, the scores being: Southland, 196; Otago, 168. The annual Diggers’ match, Otago v. Southland, was also played in Dunedin. At the completion of the usual 25 ends, the score was 132 all. An extra end was played between the last two fours to finish and Otago scored two points to win, making their total 134. Eight fours from Southland made the trip to Balclutha to take part in the first arranged interprovincial match with South Otago, but unfortunately the game had to be abandoned owing to rain. The centre reports with regret the deaths of four past presidents, Messrs J. H. Loudon, T. Pryde, R. D. Donaldson and D. H. Thomson.
