CHILD FATALLY INJURED
STRUCK BY TRAIN AT GAP ROAD Fatal injuries were suffered by Denis Hugh Johnstone, aged one year and 10 months, when he was struck by a train near his home at Gap Road, Winton, late yesterday afternoon. Suffering from a fractured skull, the child was admitted to the Southland Hospital at 6.45 p.m. He died about an hour and a-quarter later. The child was a son of Mr C. T. Johnstone, the manager of the experimental farm at Gap Road. Little is known yet of the circumstances of the accident, but apparently the child found his way on to the right-of-way and ran on to the line in front of the train.
An inquest will be opened today at Kew.
TWO MINOR ACCIDENTS Ronald Thompson, of 344 Crinan street, aged five, tripped and fell at his home last evening and fractured his right forearm. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital. Arthur Myron Clark, a jeweller’s assistant, aged 181 years, was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday suffering from burns to a leg. The burns were caused by some petrol which was spilt on his trousers and ignited by an open fire. His condition is satisfactory. FATAL FALL IN QUARRY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 9. Falling 20 feet down the face of a quarry at Mount Wellington this morning, Jerry Didovich, aged 50, was killed instantly. It is believed that a rock on which he was standing gave way. WOMAN’S BODY FOUND (P.A.) BLENHEIM, August 9. The body of Mrs W. C. J. Bryant, aged 60, of Pelorous Bridge, who had been missing from her home since yesterday afternoon, was found by a search party this morning on the bank of the flooded Pelorous river. The discovery was made a short distance from her home after an all-night search.
