RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF ELECTRICITY

Conservation Of Fuel And Water (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 9. Restrictions on the. use of electrical power could not be lifted, even temporarily, the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) stated this morning, because the unrestricted use of power would make it impossible to conserve fuel and water sufficiently to meet the demands of next autumn and winter. There had been some criticism about closing the small auxiliary generating sets, but closing was necessary because such sets were never meant to run continuously, and heavy work during the winter had caused breakdowns all over the country. These sets would be overhauled in readiness for next autumn and winter, and it was ,to be hoped that a dry summer would not compel their use before then. Their closing would help the fuel position at the Auckland and Wellington generating stations.
