MR ATTLEE REPLIES TO MR FRASER

Closer Relations Expected

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 9. Thanks for his message of congratulations have been received by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, from the British Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, who says the barbarian upheaval through which we have just passed leaves many urgent problems to overcome. “The unflinching stand taken by New Zealand even hi the darkest days of the war and. the high courage and magnificent record of your armed forces have drawn us even closer than before in outlook and sympathy,” adds Mr Attlee. “I believe we British, who base our democratic institutions on freedom, social justice and the value of every individual, have great responsibility and great opportunities in these days. I am sure our people will not be found wanting. Your message, with its steady confidence and courageous hope, is the pledge of our close relations for the future.”

Messages have also been exchanged between Mr Fraser and the Dominion’s secretary, Lord Addison. “I assure you that you will have New Zealand’s goodwill and our ready response to all proposals designed to secure and increase the well-being of our peoples within a wider system of security and human welfare,” states Mr Fraser in his message to the Dominion Secretary.
