HOSPITALS AND SCHOOLS

ADEQUATE LABOUR FOR

BUILDING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 8. “The previous declarations in respect of hospital and school building construction and the general declaration bringing within the scope of the Manpower Regulations all building works covered by the Essential Building Works Modification Order have been revoked,” said the Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr McLagan, today, referring to tbe alteration to the coverage of essentiality in the building industry. The Minister added: “A new declaration has been gazetted to cover the construction of hospital and school buildings, including alterations and additions to any building and the construction of new houses, both State and private. Renovations, alterations or additions to existing buildings are not, however, covered by the new declaration.”

The Minister explained that consequent upon the revocation of the Essential Building Works Labour Legislation Modification Order, under which the majority of major buildings projects were granted essentiality, it had been necessary to amend the existing declarations and the amendments would be gazetted this week. The opportunity was also being taken to secure the cooperation of employers’ and workers’ organizations to ensure that the most essential building works are supplied with adequate labour consistent with the available supplies of materials. This would be achieved through the national and district manpower utilization committees and by restriction declarations of essentiality to new housing construction, hospital and school buildings and other priority jobs, which could not be supplied with adequate labour on a voluntary basis.
