ADMIRAL FRASER HAS NARROW ESCAPE
Plane Develops Engine Trouble (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 8. Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser, Comman-der-in-Chief of the British Pacific Fleet, recently had a narrow escape when his personal aircraft developed engine trouble over New Guinea while he was flying to an advanced base depot. The inner engine burst into flames and the machine lost altitude. The fire was got under control and after failing to land at Milne Bay because of bad weather the aircraft flew on and landed at Townsville after more than 10 and ahalf hours in the air. The story was told when Admiral Fraser’s personal aircrew returned _to Mascot from Townsville. The pilot said: “The plane dropped like a stone for more than 1000 feet. I managed to pull out of the dive and immediately applied the emergency extinguishers.”
