Dr E. Marsden, Director of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who has been laid up at Edendale for a few days with a severe chill, but is now improving, reluctantly had to cancel all engagements in Invercargill for yesterday and today. However, he expects to be well enough to address the Southland Regional Planning Council tomorrow morning before returning north. Mr C. V. Goddard, registrar of Social Security and chairman of the Public Service Association (Southland), and Mr A. E. Crimp, of the Justice Department, have been appointed Southland delegates to the Dominion conference of the association.

Mr H. F.’Wilson, who has been manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Gore for the last few years, left yesterday morning to take the position of, manager of the Invercargill branch. Before his departure, he was met by the staff of the bank at Gore and the managers at Mataura and Tapanui and presented with a cromium-plated smoker’s companion and ashtray. The presentation was made by the Gore accountant, Mr J. M. Alexander. Mr G. A. McDonald, of H. and J. Smith, Ltd., Invercargill, has been appointed acting manager of the firm’s Gore store during the absence of the manager, Mr J. Ritchie, on leave.

Mr J. F. Matheson, who has been away from Invercargill for the last eight years, returned to the city from Melbourne at the weekend. Mr Matheson is a son of Mr John Matheson of Tay street. He left Invercargill to take up a position on the staff of Duntroon Military College and at the outbreak of war enlisted in the Australian Forces. He was on active service in the Middle East and in the Pacific, holding the rank of staff sergeantmajor. Mr Matheson intends to settle in Invercargill. Mr G. C. Hamilton, of Gore, will leave this morning to attend a meeting of the executive of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association at Christchurch.

Mention of the fact that Mr Moses McLay, who has been session clerk of the Riversdale parish for the last 42 years, has* retired to live at Gore was made at a meeting of the Mataura Presbytery. It was stated that Mr McLay’s period of service was a record. A decision was made to forward him a letter expressing appreciation of his faithful work. Guests at the Grand Hotel include Messrs T. H. Murdoch (Hastings), W. R. Coles (Christchurch), F. Pink, G. Simpson, W. R. Sinclair, R. Wilkinson, 'A. B. Cassie, W. H. Saunders, A. J. Watts, G. Wilhelmsen, C. R. Birchall, A. L. Cassie, D. J. Lawrence, R. A. Winkie, A. W. Milbum (Dunedin) and J. MacKenzie (Wakatipu).
