SUCCESSFUL LABOUR CANDIDATE

Wife Living In Hamilton

(P.A.) HAMILTON, July 28. There was perhaps no person more interested in the result of the British elections than Mrs J. Diamond, of Ohaupo road, Hamilton. She is the wife of the successful Labour candidate for Manchester (Blackley Division), Mr J. Diamond, who polled 19,561 votes compared with the 14,747 votes of the sitting Conservative member, Mr J. Lees Jones. For the last five years Mrs Diamond and her three small children have been living as refugees in the Dominion. Mrs Diamond said today that sire was more anxious than ever now to return home after hearing of her husband’s success. She had never expected such a victory, and she did not think that her husband did either, as the seat he won was always regarded as a safe Conservative one. She had made all preparations to return home and was daily awaiting word of an available boat. Although she had known no one when she first came to New Zealand, said Mrs Diamond, she considered her stay here had been “marvellous.” Her three children would go back to England strong and healthy, and they had been miraculously spared the strain of war. They had been particularly attracted by the weather - in New Zealand, and were not looking forward to the English winter. She would very much like to take New Zealand s climate back with her.
