OBITUARY—Mrs Clara Jane Edwards, who died recently at the age of 84, was one of Riverton’s oldest settlers. She came to New Zealand with her parents when she was not a year old. They arrived at Dunedin in 1861, and her father, Mr Beer, came to Southland and built Ermedale station at Gropers Bush. In 1862 Mrs Beer and her young son and daughter came from Dunedin in a ship called Fraser. A few years later the family moved to Riverton, where Mrs Edwards went to one of the first "pay-as-you-learn” schools kept by Mr Cameron in South Riverton. Later Mrs Edwards w-orked in a country store for Mr Acheson, father of Judge F. O. V. Acheson, and then kept a small shop in Palmerston street, Riverton. On her marriage to Mr W. J. Edwards, she went to Dunedin to make her home, and lived there till her retirement to Riverton 11 years ago. Mrs Edwards has long been known in Riverton for her retentive memory and her keen interest in everything connected with the Early Settlers’ Association. Some of her reminiscences were published a few years ago in the Riverton Centenary Booklet.
