1ST ARMY’S TRANSFER TO PACIFIC
Units To Be Regrouped
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 22. Many hundreds of officers and men, comprising headquarters units of the United States Ist Army, are on their way to the Pacific via' the United States, but the army which LieutenantGeneral Courtney H. Hodges will lead against the Japanese bears little re-
semblance to that which spearheaded the Allied drive in Europe, says the correspondent of the Associated Press of America. It cannot yet be disclosed how many combat units will be retained for the Pacific, but the entire army will be regrouped with personnel coming from a surplus pool which will be formed in the United States under a re-deployment programme. The divisions which were left in the Ist Army when victory came were transferred to the 3rd and 9th Armies, making their divisional total 19 and 25 respectively. First Army headquarters detachments were ready to move out immediately after VE Day.
