ATTACKS ON GERMAN SHIPPING
Coastal Command Aircraft (R.N.Z.A.F. Official News Service.) SCOTLAND, April 8. A number of heavy attacks on Üboats and surface shipping in the Baltic and enemy merchantmen off the Norwegian and Dutch coasts have been made by Royal Air Force Coastal Command aircraft recently. The results have been successful, an indication of the damage done being given by a New Zealand pilot, Flight Sergeant A. F. Bird, Wellington. He attacked the largest merchantman of the trip. “We left all the ships either on fire or smoking and most of them badly damaged,” said Flight Sergeant Bird. “Other crews saw explosions from at least three ships. The enemy put up some flak and were even still firing with their heavy batteries on the shore.”
