GAMING CHARGE
FINE OF £lOO IMPOSED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 23. Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M., declined toj accept the defence of Rupert Joseph; McKee, who was charged at Petone oh April 11 with keeping a common gaming house, and fined him £lOO. Decision was reserved to consider counsel’s contention that the eveidence did not disclose that the defendant had been using the premises as a gaming house on the day in question. The magistrate said the evidence of taking bets over the telephone by a detective was clearly admissable evidence to support the charge. The defendant had also admitted taking the bets. When the police entered the premises they found betting material, and 'in a short time took telephone bets. A very strong case arose that the premises were being used for betting. Before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., Cyril Young, a barman, Frederick William Harding, a hairdresser, John Fitzgerald, a motor driver, and Gladys Mary Jenkins were each fined £5O for bookmaking.
