FUNCTIONS FOR SERVICEMEN

WYNDHAM.— At the Wyndham Town Hall a social and dance were held in honour of a number of servicemen. The men honoured were Sergeant R. J. Stevens, L.A.C. P. H. Leitch, Corporal W. Crighton and Private L. Mclvor. Mr D. N. A. Macpherson presided. The guests were presented with the usual monetary gifts by Rev. L. D. C. Groves, who also extended a welcome tc Corporal Cross and his Greek wife. Mr A. T. Heydon, chairman of the Town Board, spoke on behalf of the residents of the town. Each of the recipients suitably replied. EDENDALE.— There was a large attendance at the Edendale Town Hall when a social and dance were tendered to V.A.D. Ella Frame, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Frame. During the supper interval the guest was piped to the platform by Piper W. McLeod. She was welcomed by the chairman, Mr W. Findley, and presented with a bouquet by Mrs F. Browne. Mr T. Hickey, president of the Edendale R.S.A., made the customary monetary presentation and also Mrs J. Blair’s hold-all. Mrs Frame was also presented with a shoulder spray. A social, which was largely attended, was held in honour of Private William Tither, second son of Mr and Mrs W. Tither, of Terrace Farm, Edendale. The guest of honour was piped to the platform by Piper W. McLeod, where he was welcomed by Mr W. Findley (chairman), and Mr T. Hickey made the presentations. Private Tither suitably replied. TUATAPEKE.— There was large gathering in the Papatotara Hall when residents assembled to welcome home Flight-Lieutenant J. H. Norman, D.F.C., and Lieutenant J. J. Corkery, of the Fleet Air Arm. The Rev. R. C. McKenzie presided. Mr C. F. Bruce, on behalf of the residents of the district, referred to the varied and meritorious service given by Flight-Lieutenant Norman and Lieutenant Corkery. Flight-Lieutenant Norman had the honour of returning with the first Air Force decoration brought back to Tuatapere. He made a monetary presentation to each. Mr S. J. Crawford, on behalf of the Patriotic Zone Committee, made presentations to Flight-Lieu-tenant Norman and Lieutenant Corkery. Mr Crawford, on behalf of the Women’s Knitting Circle, also made a presentation to Private Sylvia Baker, W.A.A.C. Mr Bruce presented addresses to Warrant Officer R. W. Campbell, Corporal A. V. Ward and Sapper E. E. Bennett, long-service men who were publicly welcomed home on a previous occasion, and all three of whom have now returned to their civilian occupation. The Rev. H. J. McFadgen spoke on behalf of the religious bodies.
