Sporting ROYAL LANCER WELL

Invercargill Track Work

By

HAMPTON

Excellent weather favoured training operations at Invercargill on Saturday morning and the majority of Dunedin candidates from headquarters were seen in action. The course proper, with the poles 30 feet out, was heavy for early work, but improved later in the morning.

Royal Lancer was in a generous mood when he led Sal home at the end of a mile and a-quarter, the last mile in 1.53 4-5, the last six in 1.26 1-5, and the last half in 57 3-5. Royal Lancer put plenty of dash into his work and pulled up well. Sal also galloped very freely. They will be ridden by W. F. Ellis in their respective engagements at Wingatui. Wild Cry led Fair Trial home over seven in 1.34 4-5, the last half in 56 2-5. Fair Trial was slightly lame behind after the gallop. Great Coon was responsible for a good solo effort in running seven in 1.34, the last half in 55 2-5. He is a very generous worker and has improved a lot. Psalm jumped off at the half and was joined by Janice two furlongs from home. The half took 53 2-5, the last two in 27 2-5. Psalm was very sore after her work and her Welcome Stakes engagement seems very indefinite unless she throws off the trouble. Fleet Street sprinted home three furlongs in 39 3-5, and did it well. Wantwood, a fine type of two-year-old by Salmagundi from Pink Bond, was given barrier practice. He sprinted a couple of furlongs in 26 4-5. . Hunting Charm ran an easy mile in 1.59, the last half in 57sec and did it well. Carolyn was doing it better than Sandy Pal at the end of six in 1.26, the last half in 57 1-5. Carolyn strips very well. Lisheen and Parallel were together at the end of five in 1.7 4-5, the last half in 54 3-ssec. Spanish Lad took 1.10 for the same journey, the last halt in 57sec. Last Effort and Eboness took 1.27 2-5 for six. Inscrutable was going better than either Royal Chorus and Royal Brief at the end of a mile and a-quarter, the last mile in 1.54 4-5 and the last half in 53 4-5. It was a good effort on the part of Inscrutable. Pocket Flash and Jack o’ Lantern both gave good displays in a bout over six hurdles. Others to work were Southern Sail, Aurora Australis, Sea Power, Red Prize and Starlee.

Reminders Acceptances close at 8 0 clock tomgnt for the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting. .. Acceptances for the Dunedin meeting close at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Has Prospects Catalpa is a Canterbury candidate, who will be entitled to consideration in the Auckland Trotting Cup.

Good Record The Raker has a good record in the Dunedin Cup. He dead-heated with Eulogist in 1942, and ran Palfrey to a head last year. The Raker has 7st 101 b this time and may again run well. Wingatui is easily his favourite course. Derby Candidate Colais has gone to Ellerslie, where he will complete his preparation for the Great Northern Derby. He was third in the Wellington Guineas, while at Riccarton he was fourth in the Derby and third in the Canterbury Cup. Auckland Cup Prospect According to a northern report H. N. Wiggins will ride Merry May in the Auckland Cup. She was second last year with 7.2 and now has 7.4. Merry May is a solid stayer, and at her last start she was third to Lou Rosa and Marble Fox in the Mitchelson Cup. Natural Pacers

Three of the progeny of the treble New Zealand Cup winner, Indianapolis, are showing promise at Epsom. They are Indian Star, Indian Lad and Indian Quest, and all are three-year-olds. These are die oldest of the Wrack stallion’s progeny, and so far the great majority of his stock are natural pacers. Rules Altered

Alterations to the rules have been drafted by the New Zealand Trotting Conference to allow a horseman to drive “in more than one division” of a race. Previously the rule allowed a horseman to “ride or drive in both divisions,” and the new clause has been introduced because of the likelihood of three divisions being necessary in some coming holiday events. Two Cup Horses Out Mr W. S. Goosman has had bad luck with his two Auckland Cup candidates, Representative and Expanse. Representative is on the easy list and will not be seen in public during the holiday meetings, and it has been found necessary to ease Expanse in his work and it is considered unlikely that he will do much racing for some time. Expanse injured himself when going out to contest the King George Handicap at the Avondale meeting at Ellerslie in November. In spite of this he ran a remarkable race and was beaten by a head after making up a lot of ground. Aucklanders were confident that he would give a good account of himself in the Auckland Cup, for which he was one of the early favourites. MANAWATU AND TARANAKI REHANDICAPS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 17. The following rehandicaps have been declared for the Manawatu and Taranaki meetings:— AT MANAWATU Hiahweioht Handicap—War Effort, 10.4. Gillies Handicap—Dash o’ Dink, 8.11. SERVICES RUGBY IN BRITAIN South Africans Draw With N.Z. Team (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, December 16. The New Zealand Army Rugby XV drew with the South African services side 3—all. The South Africans should have secured a good lead in the first spell when they had the best of the game. The New Zealanders hung on and made desperate efforts late in the second half to snatch a victory. Herron scored New Zealand s points with, a penalty goal.
