BIG SCORING ON SATURDAY

START OF TWO-DAY CRICKET MATCHES Two-day cricket matches —the first played since the 1939-40 season-—were begun on Saturday afternoon with the ; opening of the second round of the i Southland Cricket Association’s senior : competition. Rain fell during the afternoon and play was held up for about < half an hour. Wickets were dead and conditions were not of the best. However, some big scores were recorded during the afternoon. Marist compiled 315 runs against Invercargill. Of this total N. Forde scored 92, M. Rattray 54 and J. Donaldson 49 not out. In the Old Boys- 1 Union match, E. J. Hawke (Old Boys) scored 53 and J. C. Scandrett Old Boys) scored 40. Conditions favoured the bowlers in the Appleby-Bluff match and the scoring was 1 small. Good bowling averages were secured by D. Morrison (Appleby) and I. Barnett (Bluff). MARIST’S BIG SCORE Marist had first use of the wicket in its match against Invercargill. The side batted for the greater part of the atternoon and compiled the big total of 315 runs. Invercargill batted for about 25 minutes before play ended for the day and scored six runs without the loss of a wicket. The wicket was dead and gave no assistance to the bowlers. N. Forde, the Marist captain, played a forceful innings. He scored , 92 runs. Although he gave some chances, they were hard chances, and he was unlucky not to get his century. G. Donaldson, 49 not out, played well, and M. Rattray, 54, did some big hitting. Sanders, who scored 30, also batted well. Invercargill missed the services of G. Overton. Of the bowlers tried, A. Of the remaining batsmen only Snow, who scored 11. and Dunn, 14 not out, reached double figures. O'Grady was the most successful Union bowler. He took four wickets for 32 runs. Union batted for only a few minutes, but during that time they lost a wicket. G. Elder, who opened with J. Hamilton, was bowled by Fraser with the second ball of the innings. Thompson 25) beat Borstal 93 on the first innings. One Borstal player scored 33 runs and another scored 28. Bowling for Union, J. Thompson took six wickets for 33 runs and Halbert took three for 12. Georgetown 128 (Whelan 38 not out, W. J. Warburton 26, Bean 23, Hillstcad 21) beat Marist 65 (Taylor 17, N. Forde 16) by 63 runs. Bowling for Georgetown, Edwards took five wickets for 33 runs and A. Warburton four for 13. Bowling for Marist. R. Forde took five wickets for 29 runs and T. Carroll three for 39. High School 175 for six wickets declared (Gilbertson 45, Gill 31, Agnew 25, Richardson 24, Halligan 20 not out) defeated Old Boys 19 and 30 for four wickets (Murray 11) on the first innings. Bowling for School, Noble took seven wickets for 10 runs and Gilchrist two for 7. For Old Boys, M. Murray took two wickets for 14 runs. JUNIOR B—Old Boys 124 (Bell 46, Rewcastle 26 not out, McCrostie 22) beat A.T.C. 118 (Montgomery 46, Miller 17, Tuffrey 17) on the first innings. Bowling for Old Boys, Rewcastle took five wickets for 26 runs. For : A.T.C. R. Dick took four for 29 and Jones four for 18.

TWELFTH MAN CHOSEN

If he is available, H. Mclvor (Bluff) will be the twelfth man in the Southland team to play Otago in the return match at Dunedin next month.

WELLINGTON TEAM

Match Against Auckland (P A ) WELLINGTON, December 17. The Wellington cricket selectors have chosen the following team to represent Wellington against Auckland in a match to be played at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday next: r. L. H, Mooney (Institute-St. Patrick s) captain, S. A. McVicar (Petone). J. Duffy (Karori). W. Bain (Kilbirnie), J. Ell (Mid-land-Wellington), G. Rowe (Karori), J. G. Ashenden (Kilbirnie), R. Allen (Kilbirnie), H. Chapman (Hutt), A. M. Matheson (Taranaki), N. Hoar (Manawatu), D. Knapp (Jn-stitute-St. Patrick’s), twelfth man. McVicar will be unable to accompany the team on its southern tour. D. Brian (University) will take his place.

CANTERBURY TEAM TO PLAY OTAGO
