Mrs Eustace Russell, Herbert street, has returned from a holiday at Hastings.

Miss M. Prichard, Dunedin, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs H. D. Prichard, Don street.

Mrs W. F. Sturman, Earnslaw street, leaves today to spend a holiday at New Plymouth. Mrs R. G. Lund, Fulton street, leaves on Tuesday to spend a holiday in Christchurch.

Miss Molly Macalister is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs S M. Macalister, Dalrymple street. Mrs A. F. Speight, Redcliff, visited Invercargill for the break-up ceremony of St. John’s Girls’ School. Mr and Mrs S. Tansley, Wellington, arrive on Tuesday to stay with Mr and Mrs A C. Tansley, Ythan street. Miss Raynor Huffadine, Dunedin, is the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs J. H. Huffadine, Nelson street. Miss Phyllis Sutton, Masterton, arrives today to spend a holiday with her mother, Mrs J. R Suttton, Earnslaw street.

Mrs L. T. Cockerill, Gore, who is visiting Dunedin, will arrive next week to spend Christmas with Mrs D. McPherson, Beatrice street. Mrs J P. Pickerill, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs J. S. Brass, Beatrice street, will leave on Monday on her return to Wellington. Miss T Prendeville, who has completed her probationary year on the staff of the Nightcaps school, was presented with an envelope at morning tea by the rector, Mr A. G. Williams.

At their annual recital in the Women’s Club, the pupils of Miss Mary Fitzgerald gave a varied programme of pianoforte solos, duets, and trios; also singing and elocutionary items. The performers were introduced by Mr J M. Wilson, and during the evening bouquets were presented to Miss Fitzgerald by June Campbell and Joy Blomfield.

On Thursday evening, the women patients at Victoria Memorial Home were entertained by members of St. Peter’s juvenile choir, when Christmas carols were sung, and items given by several visitors. An enjoyable evening was spent, and the committee expressed appreciation to performers, and to all who had remembered the home and its work during the past year. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Jessie Thelma, third daughter of Mr and Mrs David Black, of “Avondale,” Isla Bank, to Sgmn. Cecil (Mick), 2nd N.Z.E.F. (on furlough), eldest son of Mr and Mrs C. E. G. Paulin, of Glenorchy.

WEDDING IN ROME

Gore Tui As Bridesmaid (Official Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) ROME, December 14. Private Hazel Duxfield, a member of the Tuis, of Matamata, was married to Sergeant Jack Alexander, of Dunedin, by Padre Hector West, of Alexandra, at St. Andrew’s Church, in Rome. The bridesmaid was Private Marion Moore, of Gore. The best man was Sergeant J. B. Stevens, of Dunedin. The bride’s brother, Private Selwyn Duxfield, ./as also present.

RED CROSS NEWS

The office of the society is situated in H. and H. Motors* Buildings and is open daily from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Telephone 3025, P.O. Box 150.

During the coming week, special Christmas comforts will be given to the soldier patients in Montecillo Home, Dunedin, Waipiata Sanatorium, and local hospitals. A kindly gesture was made by Jennifer and Boyd Clark, Hokonui, when again this year they handed in the sum of 25/- to be spent on strawberries for the returned men in hospital. This is the result of penny collections during the year at dinner-time on Sundays. The society acknowledges with thanks the following donations: —Pupils Intermediate School, proceeds of concert, £1; Winton Sub-Centre, £l2/13/6 for sick and wounded fund: Roslyn Bush W.D.F.U., £ll/2/8 for P.O.W. fund; Wyndham Sub-Centre, donation sick and wounded fund, £10; same subcentre, £lO for P.O.W. fund; same subcentre, £lO for centre. During the week knitted goods have been received from Otautau Sub-Centre, Avenal-Northend Committee, South Committee. Refugee clothing parcels have been received from Miss Taylor, Mrs Golden, Oreti, Mrs Knowles, Oreti, Riverton Sub-Centre, Waimatuku SubCentre, Mrs Manson, Otautau, and Gladstone Committee. Donations of biscuits for soldiers in hospital have been received from the following:—Hokonui W.D.F.U., Waimatuku Sub-Centre, and Lochiel Sub-Centre.

The holiday camp for servicemen’s wives and families is to be held at Bluff from January 8. On Thursday evening members of the local R.S.A. and Red Cross members met at Bluff, and arrangements have been made for the members to co-operate with the camp committee to help with the effort. Country Red Cross Sub-Centres are asked to assist their sister society at the Bluff, by forwarding donations of goods, such as vegetables. The camp is in need of the loan of four high-backed baby chairs, 12 kitchen chairs, and six medium easy chairs. Please communicate with the local secretary, R.S.A., Bluff, if you are willing to place these articles on loan to the committee. A baby’s bath is also required. V.A.D. VOTES—The following were successful in the recent Advanced Home Nursing examination: —Honours. Miss Lesley Stanley; pass, Misses Alice Middleton, Jocelyn Broughton, Edna Sinclair, Mrs M. Stirling, Miss Heather Matheson, Mrs Nina Mackenzie, Miss Gem Witt; bar to medallion, Mrs Irene Stoddart.

PATRIOTIC NOTES

The depot will be closed from Wednesday, December 20, 1944, to January 30, 1945. Hawthorndale Report.—The house-to-house collections for the past three months amounted to £l6/8/-. In addition, Mrs Cowman contributed £1 from the sale of cakes and Mrs Philpot £l/10/- from the sale of sweets. Knitting handed in included: 14 pairs of socks, four pairs of mittens, two scarves, one long-sleeved jersey, and one pullover. Lady Galway Guild—The guild thanks the Limehills Patriotic Committee for several splendid parcels.
