END OF SCHOOL YEAR
BREAK-UP OF MIDDLE SCHOOL Concert In Civic Theatre The annual break-up ceremony of the Middle School, held in the Civic Theatre yesterday, took the form of a concert given by the pupils of the school. The quality of the singing by the large choir was a tribute to the musical tuition given by the headmaster, Mr G. F. Griffiths, and members of the staff. Mr S. Rice, chairman of the South-, land Education Board, spoke to the children and presented dux prizes to Marion Thompson and George John Griffiths. In congratulating the two duxes on their success, he said that the boy’s prize had been given by 2nd Lieutenant James B. Gordon, a former pupil of the school, who had been killed in action in Italy this year. Songs and recitations were given by the choir and the infants and the following other items were given:—Recitation, E. Crisp; Highland Fling, Elsie Erskine, Joyce Garrick, M. Beer; song, Pauline McKitterick and Joan McDonald; piano solo, Marie Walker; verse speaking, pupils of Standard 3 and 4; playette, pupils of form 2; folk dancing, junior girls; piano solo, Kathleen Wilkes; Irish jig, M. Beer, J. Garrick and Elsie Erskine; tap dance, Barbara McConechy and V. Hamilton; playette, pupils of form 1. BREAK-UP CEREMONY AT NORTH The break-up ceremony of the North School, Invercargill, was held at the school yesterday. Mr J. Pickard, who presented the primary school and St. John Ambulance certificates, spoke to the children and said they should cherish the memory of the schoqj and the teachers. Mr Pickard then referred to the late H. J. von Tunzelman, who had been a teacher at the school before he entered the Air Force. He had passed for the rank of pilot officer, but before it could be gazetted he had been killed while on flying operations in New Zealand. A memorial prize, awarded to the run-ner-up to the dux, had been presented by his parents. The Rev. Hugh Graham presented copies of the New Testament to each child leaving the school on behalf of the Bible Society of Otago and Southland. The headmaster, Mr J. A. Cushen, also addressed the pupils. The dux medal was presented to David Tait and the Herbert von Tunzelman Memorial Prize to Marilyn Bigwood.
