STEER RIDING AT SHOWGROUNDS
Thousands Present At Ringside Expert handling of virile young steers by fearless riders and spills and thrills gave a crowd of several thousand spectators two hours of exciting entertainment at the showgrounds last night. The annual rodeo .contest at the Southland show established itself several years ago, and every year has added something to the spectacular exhibitions. Last night the peak must have been .reached. A record entry of 47 young men competed. Most of them were beginners out for the fun and thrill of a new experience, but a good number knew their steer-handling and acquitted themselves well. Some of the riding was spectacular and brought rounds of applause from the crowd. It was one of the best evening entertainments ever staged on the showgrounds. In addition to the rodeo contest there was an attractive programme of cycle racing, pony trots, a pacing exhibition and a display of national dancing by the Southland School of Highland and Classical Dancing. The Regimental Band was in attendance. Mr Alex Sutherland, the organizer, had the programme well planned and everything was carried out without a hitch. No fewer than 51 steers were used in the rodeo contest. Following are the results:— CYCLE RACING ONE MILE First heat.—J. Smith (190yds) 1, R. Smith (50) 2, L. Johnston (60) 3, H. Jones (70) 4.
