METROPOLITAN SHOW AT INVERCARGILL
IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY OF STOCK LIGHT HORSES WERE OUTSTANDING Some of the best of Southland’s purebred livestock was on view at the 78th annual show of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. Although the schedule was again restricted because of lack of accommodation —it was the third consecutive one-day show of the association—the display was thoroughly representative of the wide range of breeding activities of the province. The judges were favourably impressed with the entries and expressed the opinion that in quality were the equal of any assembled in recent years. The display of light horses was outstanding. It was one of the features or A full programme was completed within the narrow limits of a fixed time-table. There was plenty of incident to suit the spectators, whose attention was held by the moving stream ot stock, culminating in a lively programme of competitions The weather was warm and overcast throughout tne day. Visitors streamed to the grounds from early in the morning until about 3 o’clock. The grandstand was filled and the spectators were two and three deep around the ring. The sideshows and trades displays were also well patronized. The official opening was performed by the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Minister in Charge of War Expenditure, the ceremony being followed by the grand parade. The competitions, which occupied the remainder of the afternoon, were keenly contested and the spectators were treated to an excellent display of jumping. The evening entertainment, with its rodeo and other attractions was well supported, despite counter-attractions.
