Commercial BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

HEAVY YARDING OF FAT CATTLE (P.A.) DUNEDIN, December 13. A feature of the weekly stock sale at Bumside was a heavy yarding of fat cattle, 430 head being placed for auction. The large number had the effect of easing prices. There were many heavyweight animals and the quality generally was first class. The sale for cattle opened at values on the level of last week’s auction, but prices eased later and heavy quality realized prices from 30/- to £2 a head easier. The prices paid for medium cattle did not depreciate as much, though they too were easier by from 10/- to 15/- a head. Extra prime bullocks brought to £22, prime £lB/2/6 to £2O/2/6, medium £l5/17/6 to £l7/7/6, light from £l4/2/6; extra prime heifers realized up to £l5/17/6, prime £ll/7/6 to £l3/2/6, medium £9/10/- to £lO/10/-, light from £B/2/6; extra prime cows brought to £l2/2/6, prime £9/10/- to £lO/7/6, medium £7/7/6 to £B/2/6, light from £7/17/6. There was an average yarding of fat sheep of which the majority were ewes. The market opened with values equal to those of last week. Extra prime wethers made to 36/6, prime 32/- to 34/6, medium 27/6 to 29/-, light from 23/-. Prime ewes brought 19/- to 22/-, medium 16/- to 17/6, light from 15/-. The yarding of fat lambs totalled 450 and interest was centred on pens of prime quality, bidding being particularly keen. Prices were maintained on last week’s rates as follows: —Extra prime lambs to 34/6, prime 29/to 32/6, medium 24/- to 26/-, light from 20/-. The yarding of store cattle was the largest for some time and there was spirited competition. A pen of forward-conditioned three to four-year-old steers realized £l3. Three-year-old quality cattle brought from £ll/10/- to £l2/12/6, two to three-year-old £B/12/6 to £9/7/6, 18-months-old from £6 15/- to £7/12/-. In the pig section, good quality baconers experienced a particularly keen sale, the market opening on an easy note but improving considerably as the auction progressed. Prices for extra prime baconers were the highest paid for some time, ranging from £B/12/- to £9/12/-, prime £6/18/to £7/15/-, medium £5/15/- to £6/5/-, light from £4/14/-. The entry of vealers was heavier than usual and consequently prices were somewhat easier, best runners bringing from £9 10/- to £lO/10/-, good quality vealers £5 17/- to £6/15/-, medium £4/14/- to £4/15/and small £2/10/-.
