Sporting INVERCARGILL TRACKS

Aurora Australis Resumes

By

HAMPTON.

Conditions were excellent for training operations at Invercargill yesterday morning and good use was made of the course proper with the poles about 30 feet out. Wild Cry impressed by running seven furlongs in 1.31, the last half in 54sec. Fair Trial has recovered from the foot injury which kept him off the scene for a few weeks. He ran the last half of an easy seven in 56sec. Benbecula, Signal Officer and Royal Chorus finished in that order at the end of a mile bout, the last seven in 1.34 2-5, and the last half in 52 2-ssec. All three finished on well, but there was no pace on in the early stages. Benbecula did his work particularly well. Carolyn and Sal were together at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, the last half in 53sec. Royal Lancer and Spanish Lad took 1.22 2-5, the last four in 55sec. Sailor’s Pal ran a smart half in 51 2-ssec, while Sea Power took 54 3-ssec for the same journey. Southern Wave did pace work. She knocked herself during the week, but the trouble is not serious. Fuzzy Wuzzy took 1.34 4-5 for seven, being joined at the six by Lindy Lou. The six took 1.22 2-5, the last half 54sec. Sandy Pal was going much better than Janice at the end of five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Southern Sail ran the last seven of a mile in 1.33, the last half in 54 l-ssec. Last effort was stopping at the end of five in Imin 7 2-ssec. Hunting Charm covered a mile in 1.55 1-5, the last half in 57sec.

Inscrutable was going well at the end of a mile in 1.51, the last half in 55 2-5. Royal Brief impressed by a mile effort in 1.50, the last half in 53 3-5. He finished on very strongly and it is intended to race him over middle distances. Great Coon worked well to run seven in 1.33 2-5, the last half in 53sec.

Jack o’ Lantern (Boyle), Pocket Flash (Hillis) and Lisheen (Mears) gave an attractive display over six hurdles.

Nominations Tonight Nominations for the Wyndham and Southland New Year meetings close at 5 p.m. today.

Strong Hand Dillon Hall is represented by 32 of the 86 yearlings entered for the 1947 Wyndham Juvenile Stakes. Prize Ring Prize Ring took no harm from his Riccarton racing and he is a regular worker at Invercargill. Back Again The Salmagundi mare, Aurora Australis, which has been taken up again, put on some condition during her absence from the tracks.

Worthy Addition A repetition of his fine form at Wairio on Saturday would find Worthy Addition playing a prominent part among the square trotters during the holiday meetings. His solidness will certainly stand to him. Novice Winners

The two novice winners at the Wairio Trotting Club’s meeting lack nothing on the score of breeding. Turi Queen is an aged mare by Quite Sure from Marvin Dillon, the latter a halfsister to Leeway, Katene and Ruru. Loyal Nelson is a five-year-old gelding, by Grattan Loyal from June Nelson, the dam of Kid Wolf (2.6 3-5). A Comparison In the Dunedin Cup Kevin now meets Royal Lancer on 91b, Amorlad on 71b and Foxhaven on 121 b worse terms than when he beat them in the New Zealand Cup. Royal Lancer, who has been kept well up in the weights, meets Amorlad on 21b better terms. The last race Royal Lancer won was the Hazlett Gold Cup almost two years ago. Winton Classic

Eighteen three-year-olds remain in the Winton Juvenile Stakes and if all went to the post it would be necessary to run this classic in divisions. As six of the number are as yet unnamed it is unlikely there will be more than 12 starters. The safety limit for harness events for the Winton track is 12 across and three behind. Psalm’s Condition Psalm has been causing her trainer some concern. The Salmagundi filly has been physicked since the New Zealand Cup meeting. She was restricted to a sprint down the straight yesterday morning. She puts on condition immediately she is eased in her work. Excellent Form

Mamanuas, who has been nominated for the Gore and Winton meetings, is a five-year-old gelding by Quite Sure, from Mersa Matruh. In his last start, at Addington on Cup day, he finished fourth behind Blue Horizon, Sure Lady and Forewarned. This was a special handicap race, and Mamanuas had all the worst of it, being in receipt of only 60 yards. The Quite Sure gelding will certainly not meet such formidable opposition at the Southland meetings. Put Aside

Inscription and Nigger Lad have both been put aside. Inscription has been troubled with unsoundness for some time and this is not the first occasion that he has failed to stand. Last season the Man’s Pal horse won two races and was twice placed in five starts. Not much hope is held for him standing another preparation and he may be given a trial at the stud. His dam, Endorse, is a royally bred mare, being by Paper Money from Epitaph, by Absurd, from the imoprted mare, Eulogy—founder of one of the best families in New Zealand.

GORE TROTTING CLUB

Extra Race Proposed

Because of the large number of nominations received for the Trial Handicap at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day, the committee has decided to run an extra race for which the totalizator will not be opened. It will be a harness event of a mile and a-half, class 3.43, and will be open to any horse eliminated by ballot from the Trial Handicap. The race will not be held unless there are 10 acceptors. The stake will be £lOO, the second horse to receive £2O and the third £lO.
