U.S. PETROL LIGHTER DRIFTS ASHORE

Discovery By Residents Of Tangaihi (P.A.) DARGAVILLE, December 12. A 450-ton steel welded petrol lighter, with a 90 by 19ft beam and three feet draught, floated ashore on the west coast 25 miles north of Kaipara Heads. It was found on Monday by residents of Tangaihi. The vessel rests at high water. It bears the brand SSS 53 G, U.S. Army. The vessel was found to be seaworthy. One bow compartment was holed, apparently by a shell. There are other shell marks. Everything aboard was shipshape, the hawsers and cables being coiled. There were no signs that the vessel had been inhabited. A Diesel engine and pumping equipment were the only motive power aboard. The vessel, which it is estimated would carry 250 tons of oil, was built in Australia. The police have taken possession of the moveable parts.
