Mr P. B. Witt, who will leave shodtly for Christchurch, wss bidden farewell by members at the weekly luncheon of the Invercargill Rotary Club yesterday. The president, Mr J. S. Robbie, said that Mr Witt had been a most valuable member of the club. His cheerful personality and sound judgment would be missed and all members wished him happiness. Sergeant E. J. McLauchlan, a member of the City Council, who returned to the Dominion some months ago after service in the Middle East, took his seat at the council table at the meeting of the council last night. After he had made the statutory declaration, Cr McLauchlan was formally welcomed by the Mayor, Mr A. Wachner. Mr A. J. Kingsland returned by plane yesterday afternoon from Dunedin, where he attended the annual meeting of the Otago-Southland Manufacturers’ Association on Monday night. Mr G. Baird, of Tokanui, has been appointed manager of the Toi Tois Dairy Factory Company, Waimahaka. Flight Lieutenant R. E. Stevenson, Flying Officer A. G. Sutherland, Warrant Officer D. A. Anderson, Ordinary Seaman L. E. Cook, Mr L. E. Bullock, of Dunedin, and Mr G. E. Mitchell, of Invercargill, were guests at the weekly luncheon of the Invercargill Rotary Club yesterday. Reference to the deaths of three former members of the school staff, Mr T. D. Pearce, who was rector for more than 25 years, Mr J. S. McGrath, who had been an assistant master for 37 years, and Mr Charles McLean, who had been on the staff from 1882 to 1887, was made by the rector (Dr G. H. Uttley) at the annual break-up ceremony of the Southland Boys’ High School yesterday. Dr Uttley extended the deepest sympathy of the school to the relations of these former masters. Guests at the Grand Hotel include Mr H. D. Cooper (Wellington), Mr and Mrs H. Kyle (Chrstchurch), Messrs J. Brooks (Canterbury), C. L. Orbell (Timaru), G. Ross (Palmerston), C. T. McCallum (Waikouaiti), A. W. Milburn, J. A. MacDonald, S. P. Girdwood, W. Bruce (Dunedin), J. Young (Allanton), J. A. Miller (Outram), Mr and Mrs R. P. Mosley (Clydevale), and Messrs D. Cunningham (Five Rivers) and J. Burnett (Waikoikoi).
