Need For Increase Stressed The need for encouraging farmers to produce greater areas of crops for feeding to pigs next winter is emphasized by Mr P. W. Smallfield, director of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, in a circular to primary production councils. Mr Smallfield says it is expected that the present serious drought in Australia will result in no grain or meals being, available for importation into New Zealand. Last year considerable amounts of wheat, malting barley, feed barley and meals were imported from Australia. While it is too late to encourage cereal production in most districts, he says, it is not too late for the pig producer to sow areas of swedes, chou moellier, carrots, silver beet, pumpkins, kumis and maize, or for the poultry producer to sow maize and other suitable crops so that he will be as independent as possible of outside supplies, i
