LITTLE SOUTHLANDERS' CHRONICLE

My dear Cousins, Some of my new Little Southlanders seem doubtful about the Christmas competitions, so I had better explain them to you. Ever since our page first began we have visited the hospital at Christmas time, with Santa Claus, to distribute gifts to the patients, men and women, boys, girls and babies. These gifts are contributed by YOU. Prizes are given for the best gifts sent in, _ as you will see in the list' in The Chronicle this morning. In addition to these, which you make yourselves you may give bought toys or gifts, or send money which will be used to buy presents. There are-, never quite enough gifts sent in for men, and we always have to buy a certain number. I think my cousins prefer making articles for boys and girls. All Little Southlanders may enter for the colnpetitions, and even gifts from friends who do not belong to The Chronicle will be welcome, though only my cousins may take part in our competitions. Send as many entries as you please for as many sections as you please. The date for hospital day is not set yet, but I will let you know soon. It will be about a week before Christmas day. I want to see all my town cousins there, and as many country boys and girls as possible. f ‘ Your loving CHRISTMAS COMPETITIONS 1. Best gift for a baby. 2. Best gift for a boy. 3. THE GARDEN GAY —Prize.— Down in the comer there are daffodils dancing, At the side of the fish-pond there are snapdragons prancing, With fiery tongues all hanging out, Snapping at butterflies fluttering about. There are sweetpeas on the garden wall, Bowing to fairies going to a ball Which js held in the hollyhocks tall, That grow where the tree-leaves fall. Underneath the cherry tree, There flies a busy bee, Pollinating flowers so fresh and free, Flowers that-we shall always see. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin George Spears (12), R.D. Papatotara, Tuatapere. —Prize. — In springtime in the garden Are flowers in bright array, Violets and pansies, forget-me-nots and may, Crocuses and snowdrops, and daffodils that sway; All grow in the garden, in the garden gay. In summer in the garden There are flowers against the wall, Honeysuckle climbing, and roses red and tall. Pink sweetpeas and clematis, which in the breezes play, All these in the garden, in the garden gay. Borders of bright marigolds, mignonnette and stock, And in sunny sheltered nooks nodding hollyhocks, Lines of blue delphiniums in the sun’s warm rays, All these in the garden, in the garden gay..—Prize of 1/- to Cousin Mary Duncan, A.C. (15), 31 Canning street, Gore. —Prize.— The little birds chirp in the bowers, In the shade the rabbits play, The idle bees buzz ’mongst the flowers In my garden gay. The violets nod their drowsy heads, Begging spring to stay, But summer’s in the, flower beds In my garden gay. There are daffodils so bright and gold, They’re withered much today, And soon they’ll sleep in the dark brown fold | Of my garden gay. ’Tis there the elves go at night, And there the fairies play, I’m sure that every little sprite Knows my garden gay. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Betty McNoe, M.A.C.
