GERMAN ATTACKS REPULSED

Fighting In East Prussia (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, November 4. The Russians in East Prussia repulsed German infantry and tank attacks north and south of Goldap and improved their positions. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent, reports that the first battle of the winter is being fought on snow-covered ground around Goldap, where the Germans launched a mighty effort to crack the Russian lines. On the Arctic highway the Finns are engaged in hard fighting with strong German detachments, according to a Helsinki communique. The advance continues. After heavy fighting between Finnish and German forces on the Swedish frontier the Germans are retreating northwards without offering any serious resistance. Reuter’s Stockholm correspondent says that a Swedish patrol last night fired on a German' patrol which was violating Swedish territory near Karesuando. At least one German was either killed or wounded. • M. Stalin in an Order of the Day addressed to General Malinovsky, said that forces of the Second Ukrainian Front in fierce fighting today captured the town and large railway junction of Szolnok, an important German strongpoint on the Tisa river. The order names 24 generals whose troops distinguished themselves.

A Russian communique states that forces of the 2nd Ukrainian Front captured Czegled and over 40 places between the Tisa and Danube.
