Heavy going on the inside of the track made the horses at Addington on Saturday cover a lot of extra ground, but the race in the cup was one of the most exciting seen in toe history of the race. Gold Bar, as usual, set out to make the pace, but in going that did not suit him, added to toe extra distance, he was never able to put a big break on the field.

Integrity, Indian Clipper and Hardy Oak all lost ground at the start and following Gold Bar in the early stages were Shadow Maid, Clockwork, Parshall, Burt Scott, Countless and Loyal Friend. Haughty and Pacing Power both began brilliantly and with a round covered were racing behind the horses mentioned. With six furlongs to go the order was Gold Bar, Countless, Shadow Maid, Burt Scott, Clockwork, Haughty, Bronze Eagle, Pacing Power, Loyal Friend and Integrity, who had made up ground. At the half mile Countless set out to catch the leader and he was followed by Haughty, Pacing Power, Integrity and Bronze Eagle. Gold Bar was beaten at the straight entrance, where Haughty took the lead. She was immediately tackled and beaten by Pacing Power, who in turn could not withstand the challenge of Integrity. One hundred yards from the post Bronze Eagle put in a great run on the inside of Integrity and full of running, was one and a-half lengths in front and was going away as the post was reached. EXCITEMENT AMONG CROWD About six months ago Bronze Eagle went into R. B. Berry’s stable. This was his third win over two miles. It was a great race and the excitement of the biggest crowd ever seen at Addington was intense. On the cup the totalizator handled £31,760, the biggest total ever handled on a race in the South Island and second only to the Auckland Cup. Blue Horizon, the high priced South-land-bred trotter, gave a fine exhibition of trotting to win the Trotting Stakes and, handily placed throughout, won corrifortably at a very short price. He is a fine trotter and his prospects in the All-Aged Stakes next Saturday look bright. Gold Peg led from start to finish in the Victoria Handicap and had plenty in reserve when tackled by .the favourite, Lady Moness, in the final stages. Paul Collette finished third after a solid display, his best for a long time. Bexley’s Pride won the Riccarton Stakes in the most impressive style from Jackie Guy and Jack’s Son and plainly is a pacer above the average. Her win suggests she might have to be reckoned with in the Derby. STRIKING PERFORMANCE Light Brigade gave a striking performance to win the County Handicap from the Auckland pacer Sir Volo and Watcher, at a good price, was third. Will Cary redeemed himself when he dead-heated with Lady Scott in the Dominion Trotting Handicap, but it seemed that his driver, G. McKendry, was over-confident and did not realize the pace at which’ Lady Scott was travelling. Royal Worthy ran well below form and Rangefinder had every chance. Hilda Potts gave F. J. Smith his second win for the day by winning the Empire Handicap. Her running suggested her as very capable and she should win again shortly. She won very easily.

BOWLS POSTPONED ON SATURDAY

In spite of a sunny afternoon and reasonably good playing conditions, Invercargill bowlers were denied the opportunity to make a start with their competition games on Saturday. The games were postponed by the Postponement Committee of the Southland Bowling Centre. The announcement was made by radio some time after noon, but many bowlers who did not know of the centre s decision turned up to the greens to play. They expressed surprise at the decision. Apparently some of the greens were affected by the rain

which fell in the morning and the Postponement Committee considered it wise to postpone the games. Most bowlers enjoyed a friendly game during the afternoon.
