MILITARY REVOLT IN GUATEMALA
President Ponce Deposed NEW YORK, October 22. A military revolt in Guatemala has deposed President Federico Ponce after heavy fighting in Guatemala City. In a street battle which lasted 12 hours there were 1000 casualties, says the Guatemala City correspondent of the Associated Press of America.
The revolt, headed by a group of young officers, started in a military barracks. A military government has been established.
While revolutionary forces supporting two rival candidates fought one another and against the Government troops, President Menedez, of Salvador, resigned “for reasons of health,” says the San Salvador correspondent of the Associated Press of America. Menedez was succeeded by a third presidential aspirant, Colonel Osmin Aguirrey Salinas. An undisclosed number of killed and wounded resulted from the fighting.
