SEVENTH WAR LOAN IN CANADA
Launching Of Nine Ships Marks Opening
(Rec. 7 p.m.) OTTAWA, October 22. Nine freighters and warships were launched at various shipyards in Canada yesterday on the occasion of the opening of Canada’s seventh victory loan of £361,000,000 (New Zealand currency). One ship was launched for each of Canada’s nine provinces. Signals for launching were telephoned by servicemen in Ottawa to their respective wives and sweethearts stationed in shipyards. Simultaneously, the Government announced that since the outbreak of war Canada has built 1000 ships, including 500 naval combat vessels and 350 merchant freighters which are mostly 10,000-ton vessels. There has not been a single failure in any of the thousand ships. One of the vessels launched on Saturday was the largest ever built in Canada. It was a transport destined for large-scale amphibious operations. The 1000th ship produced in Canada is an Algerine class minesweeper destined for service with the Royal Navy.
