AWARUA BY-ELECTION
Sir, —I noticed in your paper dated October 17 that the Labour candidate for Awarua replied to a statement made by the National candidate that stabilization had come too late to save the farmers from costs which had already risen before the regulations came into force. Mr O’Sullivan said Mr Herron should know that the Dairy Costs Adjustment Committee was set up in 1943 to determine how best to take the industry’s costs to the 1938-39 level. The Government gave the dairy farmers a guaranteed price in 1939 and promised to stabilize costs. The Government failed to do this. Therefore I believe that Mr Herron rightly claims that stabilization came too late. Had the Government stabilized costs in 1939, as promised, our position would have i been much brighter today. DAIRY FARMER. '
