ARMY UNIFORMS
Women’s Dress Cheaper LONDON, April 3. In contrast with civil life it costs less to clothe a woman in the Army than a man in Britain. The comparative costs are £l3/0/11 for an A.T.S. and £l3/17/7 for a soldier, who may also need tropical kit (another £l6/15/2), Arctic kit (£l5/19/11), or parachutist’s kit (£lB/17/2). Figures drawn up by the War Office for the National Savings Committee disclose also the cost of equiping and maintaining various units for a year. The totals, which were used as “targets” in the “Salute the Soldier” week just ended, include £30,000,000 for a corps, £17,500,000 for an armoured division, £13,000,000 for an ordinary division, and £3,000,000 for a regiment of Churchill tanks. Churchill tanks cost £15,000 each, pontoon bridges £lO,OOO each and A.A. guns from £5OOO to £7500 each.
