BLOCKADE RUNNERS IN INDIAN OCEAN
TWO VESSELS SCUTTLED (Rec. 11.5 p.m.) COLOMBO, April 10. The first communique issued from the headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Fleet states that his Majesty’s ships and naval aircraft and Royal Air Force shore-based aircraft recently patrolling the Indian Ocean intercepted and attacked two large enemy blockade-runners. The enemy scuttled both ships. Survivors were res-, cued from one ship, but rescue operations in the case of the second ship were prevented by the suspected presence of U-boats in this area. The communique adds that the blockade runners probably carried valuable cargoes consisting of oil or raw materials.
