REFUGEES.— “NearIy 30,000 refugees from religious, racial and political persecution in Europe have escaped through Spain in the last 18 months,” said Sir Herbert Emerson, Director of the Inter-Governmental Committee on Refugees, on which 36 nations are represented. Sir Herbert Emerson added that Switzerland was giving asylum to 80,000 and Sweden to about 30,000. For many months about 1000 a month had entered Britain, the majority of whom joined their national fighting forces, joined the British forces or otherwise assisted the war effort. Sir Herbert Emerson said that compared with the total number of those entrapped the number of escapees was pitiably small, but it was not negligible. (Rugby).
