U.S. ARMY STRENGTH
PLANNED PEAK REACHED WASHINGTON, April 9. . The War Department announces that the United States Army has reached its planned strength of 7,700,000. Selective service inductions, however, must continue at the present rapid tempo with emphasis on young men needed to replace combat and attrition losses. Draft calls must also continue at levels sufficient-to expand the Navy, which will reach its peak strength of 3,600,000 on September 1. The Navy Department announces that, in view of a fewer attrition rate than had been anticipated, pilot requirements have been revised downwards. Major-General Lewis Hershey, Director of Selective Service, addressing a war veterans’ conference yesterday, said that the demobilization of the Army and Navy should proceed slowly after the war so that the United States’ voice at the peace table would be backed by military strength. He also recommended that the United States adopt a permanent system of military training.
