NEWS OF SOUTHLAND SERVICEMEN

The following Southland soldiers have jeen reported to be safe and well:—Bombardier J. C. Cortdon, son of Mr and Mrs E. Condon, Thornbury; Corporal C. B. Marchant. son of Mr and Mrs H. H. Marchant, Biggar street; Sapper Trevor Turner, son of Mrs I. Turner, Crinan street; Lance-Cor-poral I. C. Ronald, son of Mr and Mrs W. Ronald. Ness street; Charles Chilton, son of Mr and Mrs A. Chilton, Otautau. Aclvice has been received that the following soldiers have arrived safely at their destinations:—Private R. J. Mackie, husband of Mrs R. J. Mackie. King street; Private S. Pulley, son of Mr and Mrs W. Pulley, Otautau; Gunner T. Phillipson and Gunner R. Phillipson. sons of Mrs Phillipson, Ettrick street; Private R. Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs M. S. Thompson, Gore. Mr and Mrs R. M. Sapwell, Layard street, have received advice that their son, Corporal J. Sapwell, is at present in a New Zealand hospital in the Middle East, and that he is progressing favourably. Sixth Engineer W. Porteous, who is officially reported to be a prisoner of war in Tokyo, is the son of the late Mr and Mrs W. Porteous. He was born at Otautau and was educated at the Otautau school and the Southland Technical College. Before enlisting he was working at the Hillside workshops, Dunedin. Gunner P. Thomson, who has been invalided back from the Middle East, was welcomed home at a function held in the Tokanui hall. Mr J. Collie presided and said that residents of the district were pleased at having Gunner Thompson back in the district. The guest was presented with a sum of money. Other speakers were Messrs R. Mac Ewan, D. Earwaker and C. Lamb. Mr and Mrs A. Stewart, Salford street, have received cable messages from Sapper Albert and Gunner Owen Stewart that they are safe and well, also from their son Alex Stewart that he has been discharged from hospital and has now rejoined his unit. Mr and Mrs J. E. Lewis, Nightcaps, have received word that their son Trooper N. A. Lewis is safe and well. Advice has been received by Driver V.-P. Fowler’s next of kin, Miss N. Miller, saying he is safe and well. Mr and ‘ Mrs F. C. Chilton, ‘‘Redfern,” Otautau, have received advice that their son, Verdun, is safe and well.
