BIRCHWOOD HUNT MEETING PROGRAMME MARRED BY BAD WEATHER In spite of the cold and showery weather conditions there was a good attendance of followers at the Invercargill Birchwood Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. Very slippery conditions marred to a certain extent the steeplechase and jumping events, but throughout the day some good displays of jumping were seen. The main event of the day, the Lorneville Flag Steeplechase, drew a field of seven, and resulted in a very comfortable win for Mrs W. E. Hazlett’s candidate, True Range. Tjue Range was prominent most of the way and went away from the field approaching the last jump, which he hit hard, very nearly dropping his rider. Ballyaggan finished on solidly for second and Tissue Paper was a fair way back in third place. Minton fell a long way from home. A first class exhibition of jumping was given by Sister Modesta, the winner of the Novice Steeplechase. Ageratum and Quiver were well placed early in the running, but Ageratum lost his rider. Sister Modesta and Waveline moved up, but the former was clear over the last jump and came on to win fairly comfortably. Wavelind was a good second three lengths away, and Jimmie was another six lengths back in third place. During the afternoon a hunt was held, when the following riders, under Mr W. Swale, master, on Minton, participated:—■ W. Sheedy (whip), on Matchem; M. O'Brien (huntsman), on Mavora; J. C. Gardner on Bilboa; V. Langford on Tissue Paper; J. Boyle on Ageratum; T. R. E. McLellan also arrived with Sing Sing and she also has gone north. It is probable that C. T. Wilson will ride her in the Whyte Handicap. J. R.
