OBITUARY

Mr John Patterson

The death occurred at Gore recently of Mr John Patterson, a well-known resident of Mataura, at the age of 77. Mr Patterson was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand at the age of nine with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs John Patterson. The family came to Mataura, where he received his education. After leaving school he earned for himself a reputation for his prowess in the shearing sheds in New Zealand and Australia. Mr Patterson was later employed for a period on the Waimumu dredge. He was subsequently employed as a fireman in the Mataura paper mills and then at the Makarewa freezing works, where he held for a few years the position of foreman in the tallow shed. He later occupied a similar position in the company’s works at Mataura, retaining that appointment for about 20 years and retiring to live at Mataura about seven years ago. Mr Patterson is survived by his wife and one son, Mr A. J. Patterson, who is a stationmaster at a town near Auckland.
